Tommy at his fourth birthday party

Tommy at his fourth birthday party

Me: So you had joint birthday parties for Tommy and Bobby?

Mom: I pretty much did that for years until they reached school. I did that for the family.

Me: In other words, you did it so that your relatives weren't forced to go to two parties a week apart?

Mom: And so I didn't have to GIVE two parties a week apart.

Me: I'm not seeing too many toys here. A couple, but not the amount you'd see at Christmas or my own birthday parties.

Me: I think these were leaner years. We were younger and there wasn't as much money. And we were furnishing the house also. That was a big house to furnish. So there wasn't as much expendable that what you call it?

Me: Discretionary money?

Mom: Yeah, that's what I meant.

Me: It's funny, you were furnishing the house up until I left for college.

Mom: Oh, I always liked to furnish the house, I always liked to do different things. You know, some people travel all the time, I guess the house, my garden...that was always very important.

Me: So Tommy gets a racing track set this year?

Mom: Yes, which he loved.

Uncle John and Bobby

Uncle John and Bobby

Mom: I think they wanted to have their own separate party on Christmas Eve so that they could have Tommy and Bobby get their toys without having them all mixed in with everybody else's.

Me: So are you saying Aunt Millie and Uncle John actually bought presents?

Mom: Yeah.

Me: That amazes me. I don't remember that.

Mom: Well, they did it only for a short time. They got a big kick out of giving presents for Tommy and Bobby.

Me: I guess Nanny and Grandpa didn't do this.

Mom: They might've. They might've let me do that. But Uncle John was adamant.
